You are situated in the Croatian south, near Split, in the paradise of water, fields and stone. Welcome to the Town of Sinj and the Cetinska Krajina Region and experience the seduction of its rich culture and age-old tradition. In administrative sense, Sinj forms part of the Split-Dalmatia County.
The area of the Town is 194.27 km2. According to the latest census taken in 2011, the population size of the Town of Sinj and its immediate surrounding area is 24 832, while the Town itself has the population of 11 448 inhabitants.
The outlying housing developments that form part of Sinj in administrative sense include: Bajagić, Brnaze, Čitluk, Glavice, Gljev, Jasensko, Karakašica, Lučane, Obrovac Sinjski, Radošić, Sinj, Suhač, Turjaci, Zelovo.
The Town of Sinj is located in the heart of the Dalmatian hinterland, at an elevation of 320 metres, and at 30 km distance from the Adriatic Sea. Surrounded by beautiful mountains of Kamešnica, Svilaja and Dinara, Sinj is situated at the edge of the fertile Sinjsko Polje Valley, which is invigorated by the crystal clear and cold Cetina River.
Due to a specific geographic position of Sinj, which is located in a valley, and only about thirty kilometres remote from the sea, the Town’s temperate continental climate overlaps with sub-Mediterranean climate. Hot and dry summer days are relieved by cool nights, owing to the nearby mountain ranges. Winter months are abundant in precipitation, when temperatures can be very low.

The authentic symbol of the town of Sinj is the Alkar Monument. The picturesque sculpture of the Alkar - spearman on horseback, is the work of the academic sculptor Stipe Sikirica. It was set up in 1965 at the so called Biljeg – the very beginning of the Alka racecourse.
Biljeg is a place from where Alkars start the run with horse gallop when they do the Alka competition. The monument was renovated in 2019.
The name Kvartiri (French quartier - lodging, military camp) indicates their original purpose - a quarters in which the Croatian cavalry (Cavalleria croata) has been located. It was built in 1760 as a square-shaped fortress with two sets of buildings. Each had two square towers and two inner courtyards separated by stables.
The complex could accommodate four companies of horsemen with horses. Throughout history, it has been used by all armies that lived in the area of Sinj, especially the French at the beginning of the 19th century, and the Austrian when the quarters were upgraded with a two-story barracks for the Home Guard.
Today, the quarters are completely archaeologically researched and converted into a museum space and offices for culture and tourism.
The street in Sinj, which is covered with sand every year in July and August, and on both sides of which sticks (stands) are placed, so that the Alka knightly competition can be held there. The Alkar competition begins with a ceremonial procession led by a harambasha and a select company of Alkar boys, followed by maces and a squire carrying a trophy Turkish shield and guides from Edek - a seized Turkish horse.
The Alkar company is led by a flag bearer (carrying the flag of the Knights of Alkar Society, along with the figure of Our Lady of Sinj) with his aides and the Alkar duke (commander of the Alkar procession) with an adjutant. Behind them, in a double line, rides a company of alkars with spears. At the head of the procession is the alajčauš (commander of the Alkar spearman company). A minimum of 11, at most 15, and exceptionally 17 Alkar spearmen take part in the Alkar procession.
Alka tournament was founded at a time when there were many similar knightly games in Europe. All of them are now forgotten, only the Alka of Sinj celebrated its 300th anniversary in 2015, under the protection of the UNESCO as a world intangible heritage. Alka is a symbol of every struggle for freedom, for peace and health, for faith and hope.
The centre of all events and social life of the town of Sinj. It began to form at the end of the 17th century. During the Austro-Hungarian Empire in the second half of the 19th century, the square acquired modern outlines and today's architectural appearance. The fountain on the Main Square (popularly called the Funtana) was built by Mayor Antonio Buglian in 1852. A year later, the Square has been paved, and iron lighting poles - ferali - were installed.
The remains of the old fortress, among the people of Sinj known simply as the Town. Still firmly stands over the town of Sinj, even today after many centuries. It was a refuge for the residents and soldiers during the Turkish invasions. It guarded and protected the weak, it resisted the invaders. In the centre was the church of St. Michael where, at the altar of St. Barbara, the Franciscans of Rama laid a precious and miraculous image of Our Lady of Mercy.
Today’s little church at the old town has been built in 1887, on the two hundredth anniversary of the arrival of Cetina people from Rama. In honour of their eternal heavenly patroness, in 2008 the people of Sinj erected a bronze statue of Our Lady of Sinj, the work of the academic sculptor Josip Marinović.
The road leading from the foot to the church at the fortress contains 14 Stations of the Cross. Each station is the work of one of the famous Croatian artists.
The Old Town Fortress and the cemetery are under the protection of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia.

The portal has been placed at the church entrance in 1987, 300 years after the arrival of the inhabitants from Rama and the adoption of the Miraculous Image of Our Lady. The author is Stipe Sikirica. The portal highlights two most important events in the history of Sinj. On the right, it shows the "immigration" from Rama, 1687. On the left it shows the apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary on the city walls and the defence against the Turks, in 1715.
The church has been anew consecrated in August 2009 at the Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary, along with a new altar of the sanctuary and a statue of Our Lady in the monastery courtyard. The statue is a votive gift of the Gucic family and the work of the academic sculptor Josip Marinovic.
The central place, both in the church and in the hearts of the people of Sinj, is occupied by the image of the Miraculous Lady of Sinj. It was painted by an unknown author, in the 15th or 16th century. Our Lady with slightly sloping head, with her eyes downcast, has been faithfully watching over her people since they brought the picture from Rama to the Cetina region, as the greatest treasure and hope. By legend, with Our Lady’s miraculous influence, Sinj was liberated from the huge Turkish army in the battle in 1715.
As a sign of gratitude, the people of Sinj crowned the painting with a golden crown in 1716, where has been written IN PERPETUUM CORONATA TRIUMPHAT - ANNO MDCCXV (Forever crowned with glory - 1715). Today, the painting is kept in a silver frame, with a relief of the Sinj fortress on the back (author sculptor Ante Jakic). It is also decorated with a votive gifts of the faithful.
Today's bell tower with four new bells is 43.5 meters high and was completed in 1927. It has been erected in place of the old one from 1775, built of mud. The new bell tower has been made of finely worked hewn stone that is extracted in the vicinity of Sinj. It was consecrated at the feast of St. Francis of Assisi 4/10/1927.
Calm and magnificent, framed by a relief bronze door of the academic sculptor Stipe Sikirica, the Church of the Miraculous Lady of Sinj dominates the main town square. Built from 1699 to 1712, resisting wars and earthquakes, damaged many times, it has retained its original appearance to this day.
One of the most impressive and memorable symbols of Sinj, located in the city centre, opposite the church of Our Miraculous Lady of Sinj. Kamičak is a star-shaped fortress, built in 1712 on the hill of the same name. Local master builders Ignacije Macanovic and Jakov Cincidela took part in the construction.
Kamičak got its present appearance in 1890, when it was walled and forested with pine trees.
Kamičak is a protected cultural asset of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia.
The monument to the famous Franciscan is the work of the academic sculptor Kuzma Kovacic. 2.8 meters high, it was erected at the eastern entrance to the town. History remembers friar Pavao as the leader of the Rama people and the Franciscans, who in 1687, fleeing from the Turks, accompanied by the intercession of the image of Our Lady of Mercy, found a new home in Sinj and the Cetina region. He is the founder of the monastery and the shrine of the Our Miraculous Lady of Sinj.
The tombstone of a seven-year-old Roman boy Gaius Laberius holding a ball decorated with mesh-connected hexagons, a symbol of a real leather ball, is considered solid proof that the first football in Europe was played in the Cetina region. It has been found at the site of the Roman military camp Tilurium, and dates from the 2nd century. Today it is built into the facade of a stone house in Sinj's Vrlicka Street. The monument is 113 centimetres high and 46 centimetres wide. It is made of limestone.
The monumental sculpture with a fountain, created by Ivo Filipovic Grcic from Sinj. It is located in the centre of the Town Park. Emphasized symbolism, it represents the three inhabitants of Sinj, the grandfather, the father and the son who hold the huge Alka ring on their raised hands. They are dressed in men's Sinj folk costumes.
